Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson responding to early morning mass shooting

ELKHART, Ind. -- The City of Elkhart has released a statement in relation to the shooting that took place at approximately 1:11 a.m. this morning, when the Elkhart Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the 300 block of W Garfield Avenue.
One person has been declared dead, with 11 other people sustaining gunshot injuries.
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit was activated and is handling this active investigation.
Initial investigation shows that multiple individuals discharged firearms in this incident.
The City of Elkhart is asking the community if they have any photos, videos, or eyewitness accounts of this event to contact the Elkhart County Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825.
In a statement given today, Mayor Rod Roberson stated:
"My heart aches for our community. Once again, our beloved city has been tragically stricken by senseless gun violence. We mourn the precious life that was lost, and our thoughts are with the eleven individuals who were injured, along with their families, as they begin their healing journey.
The pain and ripple effects of this devastating event will undoubtedly be felt deeply across our entire community for a long time. Our city is heartbroken, and I, personally, am devastated by this profound loss and trauma.
I extend my deepest gratitude to our brave emergency responders for their immediate and courageous actions. Their swift efforts in the face of such a horrific scene undoubtedly saved many more lives, and their dedication is truly commendable. In these difficult moments, we must come together as a community to support one another and work towards a safer future for all."
