ELKHART, Ind. ---- Drivers in South Bend may notice a new billboard advertisement near the campus of Notre Dame offering recruiting info for the Elkhart Police Department.

EPD’s recruitment officer, Detective Kristin Klimek, says they’re expanding their recruitment efforts to other cities and have even advertised in other states.

The billboard in South Bend is a new concept introduced in the past few weeks.

Currently, the department has a budget for 143 officers, with 17 open positions. 15 of the officers on the force currently have 20+ years of experience and can leave the department at any time.

Even with the openings, Klimek says the department is still able to respond to all calls for service that come in.

Having more officers would help other members of the department get more breaks and add more people to specialized units or task forces.

The department will host a testing day for new candidates where they can take their physical tests and written exams next month.

The department recruiter can be reached by texting JOINEPD to 574-475-8929 or scanning the QR code below.
