Elkhart Police officer hit by vehicle at scene of accident

ELKHART, Ind. – An officer with the Elkhart Police Department was struck by a vehicle on Thursday morning while at the scene of a crash, police reported.

At 4:47 a.m., dispatch got a call about a two-vehicle crash at W. Hively and Benham Avenues.

While directing traffic at the scene of the crash, an officer was hit from behind by a Kia Sportage that was turning east onto W. Hively from Benham.

The vehicle had been pulling to a gas station’s driveway.

The driver of the Sportage stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.

The officer was treated for a concussion and a broken wrist.

The drivers of the two vehicles involved in the crash had minor injuries, police said.
