Elkhart, St. Joe counties preparing for heavy rain and possible flooding
SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- Heavy rain is heading for Michiana bringing flooding concerns along with it.
Some parts are expected to get up to four inches and officials are already preparing for the impact.
ABC57 First Warning Neighborhood Weather meteorologists say to expect potentially record breaking rain. The worst of it is expected Friday night into Saturday morning.
“They are warning people of flooding and certainly anything is possible,” John Antonucci said, the Director of St. Joseph County of Emergency Management.
In St. Joseph County areas along the river and near the Northeast said of town near Granger face potential flooding.
“Those areas populated with several subdivisions, several retention ponds, again the water table is continuing to rise in St. Joseph county,” Antonucci said.
In Elkhart, the biggest threat is in Goshen.
“For Elkhart County, the lowest point of our county is in Goshen, we’ll keep our eyes on Goshen and other areas in the county like CR3 and CR26,” Jennifer Tobey said, the Director of St. Joseph County Emergency Management.
If in an area at risk for flooding, they suggest to be proactive and prepare now. Sandbags will be available throughout St Joe and Elkhart Counties.
