Elkhart's annual River Cleanup seeks volunteers for Saturday

Elkhart Environmental Center

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Environmental Center, Parks & Recreation, and Public Works Department will be cleaning up sections of the Elkhart River on Saturday as part of the city's annual River Cleanup.

The city is seeking volunteers to assist starting at 8 a.m. at the Environmental Center.

Organizers say canoe crews will travel down the Elkhart River collecting trash/debris in the river and along the banks.

Meanwhile, ground crew volunteers will meet across the bridge at American Park at 100 Goshen Ave. starting at 11:15 a.m. to help clean up the river around the park and offload collections from the canoe crews.

Those interested in volunteering may sign up online. Canoe spots are limited and only available to those 12 and older.

Organizers say at the last River Cleanup, 22 volunteers were able to haul out two full dump trucks worth of trash, weighing just over a ton.

If you are interested in being added to the River Clean Up email list, email [email protected].
