Elkhart's Boys and Girls Club helps teens get involved through cooking

13-year-old Alex Huxhold is one of the three teenagers who joined 97 men, cooking for over 700 members of the Michiana Community, Saturday night.

100 Men Who Cook is Elkhart's second annual fundraising event, raising money for the local boys and girls club.

This event is the brain child of Old National Bank, who has been organizing this fundraiser across Indiana for the past twelve years.  But last year, was the first time these efforts reached Northern Indiana.

Although the purpose of the event is to raise money, and exceed last year's profits of $230,000, Boys and Girls Club area director James Taylor says, it's really so much more.

"Some times kids overlook that they're needed, or that they can be a contributing factor in the community to help make things better," Taylor says.

This year is the first year that young participants are included in the cooking fundraiser.  Taylor says, it's because they want to help kids get involved.

Huxhold presented lemon pepper grilled white fish over rice.  He was proud that organizers included him in the fundraising efforts.

"It feels kind of good that they think I'm responsible enough to do this," he says.
