Family of three escapes early morning fire

A family of three is left out in the cold after their home catches fire early Friday morning.

It happened just before 2:00 a.m. in the 23000 block of Amber Valley Drive in St. Joseph County.

"Residents heard some crackling noises and saw some fire come out of their ceiling from the back of the house. Everybody evacuated safely. All of our crews got here, got the fire out very quickly. And everybody has been safe," said Clay Fire Marshall, Ron Melser.

Most of the damage was confined to the attic, where officials believe the fire started.

The exact cause is unknown.
