Fatal crash investigation underway in Elkhart County

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- One person is dead after a crash in Elkhart County early Monday morning. 

It happened near the intersection of California Road and Nappanee Street around 12:15 a.m. 

Police reported a Honda CRV was traveling at a high rate of speed near Elkhart High School when it crashed into another vehicle holding four occupants, all of whom are expected to be okay.

The driver of the Honda CRV, identified as 22-year-old Braxton Smith, was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. 

During the incident, the CRV allegedly struck other objects, including a utility pole, a tree and a light pole. Two other vehicles were damaged from debris from the crash. 

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is now investigating.
