Fifth grade teacher killed in car accident

A fifth grade teacher at LaSalle Intermediate Academy was killed in a vehicle crash Friday, May 15.

The South Bend Community School Corporation released the following statement:
Mrs. Carrie Cealka, a fifth grade teacher at LaSalle Intermediate Academy, was killed in an automobile accident on Friday, May 15, 2015.

Principal George Azar shared, “Mrs. Cealka was a kind and caring teacher. She showed genuine concern and love for her students. She was quick to help a colleague and willing to support whenever needed. She was a valuable member of our staff and community.”

There will be a team of social workers and counselors available at LaSalle Academy this week to provide emotional support for the students and staff.  

Mrs. Cealka's was completing her second year of teaching at LaSalle Academy. She previously taught at Brown Intermediate Center.  

Superintendent Carole Schmidt stated “We extend our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Cealka's family, students, and colleagues.”
