Fire at Elkhart apartment complex injures one on Friday

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Fieldhouse Avenue for a structure fire on Friday morning.

Upon arrival around 8:42 a.m. EFD Squad 2 found a "multistory building with smoke showing from an upstairs bedroom window," according to the EFD.

"Squad 2 pulled an attack line and made entry into the structure. The structure was searched for any occupants or pets and none were located at that time."

The fire was quickly brought under control by 8:55 a.m., and the structure was overhauled to check for any remains of fire.

"The fire was contained to one apartment in the structure," EFD officials said. "One of the occupants did suffer a burn to the hand as well as smoke inhalation."

That person was treated and was released from the hospital Friday.

The cause of the fire in still under investigation.
