Fire hydrant flushing begins in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Fire hydrant flushing begins in South Bend this week, the city announced.

The flushing is part of routine maintenance of the city's water distribution system.

Crews will start flushing hydrants in the area bordered by Miami Street to the west, Lincolnway East to the north, Ironwood Drive to the east, and Ewing Avenue to the south.

Residents are reminded of the following during flushing:

  • Tap water might temporarily appear red, brown, or blackish in color. If this occurs, residents are instructed to run three cold-water faucets at full stream until the water runs clear.
  • Check clothes washers and icemakers before using in case of sediment.
  • If faucets seem clogged or are running slowly, remove the screens and rinse them.
  • Water pressure may fluctuate. If so, regular water pressure will return once the flushing period is over.

Flushing will be conducted through the end of October.
