Fire investigation continues after building gone

ELKHART, Ind. - The Elkhart Fire Department is still investigating a fire that destroyed almost an entire block.

Firefighters said they think the fire started at the old Tony's Shoe Repair Shop off East Street. It spread to two nearby buildings including a three unit apartment and the Lifeline Youth Center.

Investigators told us the cause of the fire could be be difficult to determine since there isn't much left of the building the fire originated from.

According to the department and city, the owner of the building was working to get the building up to living code.

The city's Code Enforcement Office told us the owner had already missed a six month deadline to either demolish the building or get it up to code.

The department said the investigation is on going.
