A cold front moved through Thursday evening, evident by the rain and sudden strengthening of winds. This cold front is bringing in some frigid air over night, and the cold air is moving in faster than usual. We call this a flash freeze. There is not an official definition, but it happens when temperatures make an extreme drop in a short period of time. In this case, temperatures will drop from the low fifties Thursday evening to the low teens on Friday morning, i.e. around forty degrees in fourteen hours!
All of the roads and sidewalks are wet with puddles from the downpours that moved through Thursday. These wet areas will freeze very quickly as temperatures drop, causing black ice by Friday morning. Be cautious of icy spots for the Friday AM commute, by stopping early and driving slow!
