Flooding complaints lead to replacement of failed culvert Thursday

BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. – Work is slated to begin Thursday on a collapsed culvert causing serious flooding issues in a neighborhood off of Red Bud Trail.

The culvert collapsed during February’s historic flooding and has been a problem ever since, according to homeowner Matt Hunter who lives on Willo Drive.

Confusion among county officials delayed the process of repair as the Berrien County Drain Commissioner said it was the property owner’s responsibility to direct the flow of water into Lemon Creek.

Writing indicating right-of-way drainage was pointed out on a county map, demonstrating the county’s responsibility to fix the drainage issue.

The Berrien County Road Department will begin to replace the culvert Thursday and pass along the ownership of the ditch to the county’s drain commission.
