Former ND pole vaulter named as alternate for London Games

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- A former Notre Dame pole vaulter who tried out for the London Olympics maybe heading to the games.

Pole Vaulter Mary Saxer has been named as an alternate for Team USA.

She placed fourth in last month's Olympic trials in Oregon.

The 25-year-old actually cleared the same height as the third place qualifier, but Saxer took an extra attempt placing her in fourth.

"The fact that neither of us clear the height following that, it put her in third place because of her one less miss than me. So, it was kind of heart breaking, because fourth and third, same height... but she goes to London," Saxer said.

Even if she doesn't get to compete in 2012, Saxer hopes to represent the U.S. in the 2016 Olympic games.
