Free self defense class for women

Police in Berrien County want women to feel safe and empowered. That's why they're offering any female 14 years-old and older the chance to take free self defense classes.

The first series of classes starts Thursday. The R.A.D. series, which stands for Rape Aggression Defense Systems, teaches women a number of skills focusing on awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance.

Police say the R.A.D program is not a martial arts program; people of all physical abilities will be able to learn the techniques that could protect them in a sexually-driven attack.

Young girls who are between the ages of 14 and 16 need to have an adult with them at the class. Women should call the sheriff's office ahead of time to register. You can contact the department at (269) 983-7141.

All sessions should be attended to get credit for completing the class.
