Friends of hit and run victim say doctors began surgery

South Bend Police say 27-year-old Stephen Stetz was struck by a Jeep Saturday night.
Police say Stetz was crossing the street when he was struck.
Police say the driver of the Jeep, later identified as 38-year-old Mark Madejek, fled the scene.
The hit and run happened Saturday evening on State Road 23 just before 8:00 p.m.
Madejek has been booked at the Saint Joseph County Jail but has not been charged at this time.
Friends of the victim say he is on life support at South Bend Memorial Hospital.
They say doctors began surgery to relieve swelling on his brain earlier Sunday.
Stetz is a Holy Cross graduate and current resident of Illinois.
