Future of gymnastics at YMCA: Program to be relocated to private gym

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Just days after a Michiana gymnastics team learned it qualified for nationals, the girls found out the 'Y' is suspending their program.

This summer, 25 girls will be relocated to Gymnastics Michiana, a private gym in Mishawaka.

The CEO of the YMCA said the growth of other summer programs forced the board to suspend the gymnastics program.

But parents said they weren't told about the relocation and it's not fair.

"Many parents feel disrespected by the Y's management. That those who are directly affected by this decision were not consulted at any point in the decision making process," said Emily Sipos-Butler, a gymnastics parent.

"But we've got to constantly look at what are the needs of that program, what spaces do we have. But at this point we anticipate having it in the fall," said Dan Asleson, President-CEO of YMCA of Michiana.

This year's competitive gymnastics team qualified seven girls to the national championship. Those girls will compete at the end of June.
