Games cancelled because of roof leak at Mishawaka High School

MISHAWAKA, Ind.-- The Mishawaka High School basketball games were cancelled Friday night because of a leak in the gym's roof.

Mishawaka basketball players said it's not the first time they've found water on the court.

Two games have been rescheduled as they work on repairing the problem.

Haley VanDusen said “You don’t notice it, it’s just in one spot and they have buckets out to catch all of it, and towels around it, I just try to not run into them!”

The boys basketball game against Niles Friday night was moved to February 8th.

Larry Stillson with the Mishawaka School Board said this problem could have been avoided.

Stillson said, “Repairing the roof is going to be a financial hardship, and the referendum would have allowed us to do it much better.”

A $28 million referendum in Mishawaka was voted down in November.

The referendum would have raised taxes for homeowners.

Zeke Zielinski believes the school corporation was asking for too much money.

Zielinski said, "I think they asked for too much and that’s what hurt them!”

Zielinkski said it's a shame that kids have to reschedule games because of a bad roof.

His son went to Mishawaka High School, and he said the building could use a few renovations.

Zielinski said, “Now it’s cancelled just because they didn’t have enough money to renovate or fix up what’s bad.”
