Gary man dies in crash on I-94 in Berrien County

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. - A Gary man died in a two-vehicle crash on I-94 in Berrien County Tuesday evening, according to Michigan State Police.

At 5:42 p.m., a 39-year-old Gary man was driving a Chevy Equinox west on I-94 when he passed another vehicle.

As he returned to his initial lane, he allegedly hit the back of another vehicle, a Subaru Crosstrek SUV.

After hitting the Subaru, the man lost control of the Chevy, near mile marker 16, and ran off the road, crashing into a tree, deputies said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Subaru, a Stevensville woman, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.

The Gary man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to reports.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the incident, deputies said.

The crash is still under investigation.

Traffic on I-94 was impacted for several hours during cleanup.
