Goshen man charged with Battery against a public safety official, resisting

ELKHART, Ind. -- What began as a man possibly facing a warning for being in McNaughton Park after curfew early Tuesday morning escalated to the man being arrested after he fought with Elkhart police.
Authorities say 37-year-old Turelle Hopkins, of Goshen, was contacted by police as he exited a porta potty at the park at 701 Arcade Ave. around 12:18 a.m. on July 22.
The arresting officer says he was driving by the park when he heard a loud snorting noise coming from one of the portable bathrooms. He left his car and approached the porta potty and heard the same noise again.
At the time, Elkhart's Park Curfew Ordinance 3215 was in effect as it was between the hours of 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
"As soon as the subject noticed me, he was immediately confrontational and was walking aggressively towards me, I tell him to not walk up on me," authorities said.
"I again advise to him that he is in the park after curfew. He then states that he didn't [know] and that he is a professional skateboarder. At this time, other EPD officers have arrived to the scene."
After resisting and kicking at police for a short period, Hopkins was taken into custody.
Hopkins is charged with:
- (2x) Battery Against a Public Safety Official - Level 6 Felony
- Resisting Law Enforcement def. knowingly or intentionally flees - Misdemeanor
- Refusal to Identify Self - Misdemeanor
He was not cited for the park curfew violation and a criminal history showed no priors.
