Gov. Daniels signs 'Lifeline' Law inspired by missing IU student

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Mitch Daniels signed a new law granting immunity to people who call 9-1-1 after drinking too much.

The bill was inspired by missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer.

She disappeared last June after a night of drinking with her friends.

Authors said that the bill is set up to encourage people to call 9-1-1 if their friends had too much to drink!

College students fought for the law.

"We are thankful to everyone....to moderate drinking," said Governor Daniels.

Opponents worry that the new law encourages binge drinking, but supporters said it's a common sense bill that will save lives.
