Governor Whitmer shows support for UAW tentative agreement with GM

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer offers congratulations to the United Auto Workers Union as they reached a tentative agreement with GM, the last of the Big Three automakers, on Monday, October 30.

In unison with her last two statements regarding the UAW's tentative agreements with Ford and Stellantis, Whitmer is excited that the UAW is finally reaching what they've steadfastly fought for after over 40 days of strike.

She wants to see these agreements grow the Michigan economy and support the hard-working men and women within the UAW.

Additionally, Whitmer wants to see this change happen quickly.

“I urge swift ratification of this deal so we can keep competing with other states and nations to lead the future of mobility," Whitmer wrote in a press release.

The deal is expected to be similar to Ford and Stellantis deals adhering to the points of contention the UAW was striking for.

UAW President Shawn Fain and UAW Vice President Mike Booth took to X to announce their third and final automaker tentative agreement.

"We were relentless in our fight to win a record contract," said Fain. "If ratified, GM salary workers will be offered general wage increases for the first time in our history. They will receive wage increases of 25 percent and cost of living allowance."

Starting wage for assembly workers, according to the new GM agreement, will increase 70 percent, with estimated cost of living from $18 an hour to over $30 an hour.

President Biden also applauded the patience and steadfast attitude of the UAW as a "testament to the power of unions and collective bargaining" in his statement regarding the UAW/GM agreement.

The United Auto Workers Union now must navigate the ratification process with the three automakers, aiming to reach an agreement in the best interest of their workers.
