Beautiful summer day in Michiana
BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- Following a water rescue assisted by a life ring on Sunday at Porter Beach, the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project is looking to add life rings at beaches across the state of Michigan.
A bill passed in February makes life rings required at all beaches with an access point to Lake Michigan in Indiana. There's no requirement in Michigan for life rings to be made available.
The Surf Rescue Project hopes that a safety equipment bill proposed in the coming years will change that.
The organization also hosted a training session at Bethany Beach on Monday for a group of local lifeguards going through their annual practice.
Leaders say the annual service is an essential part of lifeguard training.
