Habitat for Humanity Mishawaka subdivision continues to thrive

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Congressman Rudy Yakym visited Indiana's 2nd district on Monday, checking in with Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County.

The Habitat's Mishawaka neighborhood, The Fields at Highland, is close to being full.

It started at 76 lots in 2018, and now only 14 homes are left to be built and filled.

More than half of the homes in the neighborhood are Habitat homes, while 40% are called 'Fundraiser homes'.

Fundraiser homes are privately sold and mortgaged, and the money made helps fund other Habitat homes in the neighborhood.

Those living in the homes pay an average of $1,000 or less per month, making the dream of homeownership more attainable for low-income families.

While a beautiful new, energy-efficient home with a sweet price tag may seem too good to be true, President and CEO, Jim Williams says you're more likely to qualify for the life-changing program than you may think.

Like most non-profits, the work done by Habitat for Humanity is made possible through community support.

You can volunteer at build sites to help make these homes a reality. Shopping or volunteering at the local Habitat for Humanity Restores in South Bend and Mishawaka are some other great ways to help support the work the Habitat does.
