Hamlet local and tow truck driver describes US 30 crash site as a problem
HAMLET, Ind. — One of the two tow truck drivers that responded to a rollover crash after the car hit several potholes on Saturday says the area where the accident happened is a problem.
As cars and trucks flew down US 30 near 70 East near Grovertown, where the speed limit is 60 mph, they all faced the same issue: potholes.
On Saturday, a 43-year-old woman and a minor were driving on US 30 near 70 East when the car hit several potholes and the driver lost control of the car, according to a release shared by the Starke County Sheriff's Department.
The car went off the road, hitting a NIPSCO utility pole before rolling off the road. The minor had to be airlifted to Memorial Hospital.
Howard and Sons Towing and Salvage Yard was one the towing companies on scene. Howard himself says this is by far the worst damage he's seen from potholes.
"Mostly just broken wheels and flat tires most of the time. This is the first bad accident I've seen from them," Coffin shared.
He says he's lived in this area all his life and says something needs to be done.
"This part of the highway is bad, they re-did the rest of it but they didn't do this part last year and they should've but they didn't," he explained.
Coffin says something should've been done already and when ABC57 reached out to INDOT, they said they are doing something.
INDOT shared that maintenance crews were called out Sunday night after the crash on Saturday and patched the road at the request of the Sheriff's department. They also shared they're resurfacing the area where the crash happened, starting on or after Tuesday, April 7.
