Health officials warn about shigella outbreak in Michiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Health Department is warning people about a shigella outbreak in our area.

The highly contagious bacterial infection causes stomach pain, fever and diarrhea.

Health officials say it started in a daycare in early August and has since spread to at least six schools. There are now 25 confirmed cases.

Doctors recommend washing your hands often.
