NILES, Mich. -- Students at Howard-Ellis Elementary School in Niles have been celebrating Black History Month in a very interactive way!
The 5th graders turned their hallway into a timeline of historical black figures and events, stretching all the way from the 1700’s to the present day.
Teachers helped the 5th graders compile information on their person and create some artwork to decorate the halls.
The school’s Berrien RESA special education students also helped, adding some artwork of their own.
The younger kids, teachers, and even parents got to walk through and learn more about the historical figures too.
Even though they are young, students understand the importance of learning about and celebrating this month.
One 5th grader says, “it is important, one, to educate younger people about history. And two, I would say to honor the neglected.”
Another shared, "I think it’s important to know about this because it can have an impact on the world.”
There are also plans to take the celebration a step further next year.
Andrea Mainguy, 4th & 5th Grade Resource Teacher says their art teacher plans to, “help our students come up with some artwork to hang on the other side of the hallway that will highlight either an artist or a style that they had used.”
