Humane Society of Elkhart County closes facility due to parvovirus

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Humane Society of Elkhart County announced Wednesday afternoon that their facility will remain closed through at least Friday following confirmed positive cases of parvovirus in dogs.
The immediate closure was decided after consulting with shelter medicine experts. The closure includes pausing adoptions and intakes to limit possible spread, and to complete a deep clean.
Parvovirus can cause severe gastrointestinal illness and be fatal if untreated. It's not transmissible to people or cats, and officials say the best prevention is proper vaccination.
The facility is expected to reopen to the public on Friday.
Adoptions are highly encouraged once the facility is open.
Officials say while they're not certain how these cases occurred, consultations with shelter medicine experts have confirmed their standard cleaning protocols were already strong and appropriate.
Out of caution, officials have moved to even stricter sanitation practices, along with titer testing and, if necessary, re-vaccinating all dogs currently in their care.
This all comes just days after an influx of 86 cats and dogs, with most coming from a dangerous hoarding situation.
