Improvement project on West Washington in South Bend begins Monday

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Construction for the West Washington Improvement Project in South Bend will begin on Monday. The intersection of West Washington Street and La Porte Avenue is expected to remain closed until the end of July.

The project will include the installation of new curbs, sidewalks, bump outs, pavement and storm sewers on West Washington Street from Charles Martin Sr. Drive/Chapin Street to La Porte Avenue.

Crews will also be removing the westbound right turn lane from Washington Street to La Porte Avenue, and the two intersections will become narrower to create shorter pedestrian crossings, which will improve safety for everyone.

Washington Street and Charles Martin Sr. Drive/Chapin Street will remain open with restrictions during most of construction.

There will also be a two-day closure of Washington Street in early July so that crews can install storm sewers.
