Indiana father drowns while saving children in Lake Michigan

ST. JOSEPH, Mi. - An Indiana man drowned in Lake Michigan Thursday evening while trying to save his children.

First responders were called to Lions Park Beach in St. Joseph around 8 p.m.  When they got there, they say four people were struggling in the water. Two of them were rescued by a person on a surfboard, who pulled them onto the board.

The other two were siblings, ages 17 and 12, who got caught in an undertow.

Their dad, a 44-year-old from Lakeville, Indiana, went into the water to help them.  A St. Joseph Reserve Officer was able to rescue the teen and child.  Sadly, their dad went under while saving them, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police haven't yet released the man's name.
