MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The Indiana G.O.P now has an official candidate for Indiana’s second congressional district.
You'll see the same person on the ballot for both the special election and general election candidate.
Twelve candidates competed for a spot on the special election and general election ballots – but it all came down to one on Saturday.
Three hours of speeches and voting by committee members took place before a decision was finally made and Rudy Yakym was selected to be on the general election ballot for November.
When it came time for the special election decision all eleven other candidates withdrew allowing Yakym to sit on both ballots.
His win comes after two special endorsements from Jackie Walorski’s husband, Dean Swihart, and her mother, Martha Walorski.
Yakym also used to be Walorski’s finance director and they worked closely together for many years.
Yakym now has 80 days to meet the Hoosiers of his district and win their votes before facing democratic candidate Paul Steury on November 8.
Indiana Democrats will be holding a similar caucus to decide on a candidate for the special election.
