INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- 50 Indiana National Guardsmen will head to Texas early next month to assist the Texas National Guard in patrolling the southern border.
Part of their duties could involve spotting illegal drugs like fentanyl from coming into the us.
On Thursday, Governor Eric Holcomb spoke to the troops and their families at a departure ceremony in Edinburgh, Indiana.
He claims some of the drugs being smuggled into the country are killing Hoosiers.
The Indiana guardsmen won't have the power to arrest anyone crossing the border illegally.
Instead, their role is to watch and report what they see to the Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety, who will take it from there.
