Indiana State Police investigate single-vehicle Toll Road crash that kills one

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Troopers responded to reports that a vehicle crashed into a bridge and caught fire Friday morning at 4:28 a.m. on the Indiana Toll Road near mile marker 99.5, according to the Indiana State Police.

The crash happened approximately two miles west of the Bristol exit.

Initial investigation shows that a blue passenger car left the roadway while traveling eastbound, running into several crash barrels before colliding with the concrete bridge attachment for the County Road 23 overpass.

Police say that the car was engulfed in flames as a result of the crash. The driver was unable to escape from their vehicle and died on the scene.

The driver's identity has yet to be determined.

The eastbound passing lane was blocked for the investigation and vehicle removal.

This is an ongoing investigation
