Indiana student back home for graduation after immigration scare

FRANKFORT, Ind. -- After a massive immigration scare in her native Mexico, an Indiana student, is officially a high school graduate.

Elizabeth Olivas graduated from Frankfort High School this weekend. Less than a day after she made it back to the states.

Olivas was born in Mexico. She went back in April to get a visa, but a timing error prevented her from returning to Indiana.

U.S. officials were able to step in and clear the error so she could make graduation, but she did miss several big moments in her senior year.

"Every day I would wake up, I would say to myself, ‘Wow, today I had a track meet, tonight was prom, tonight was senior honors night,’” said Olivas. “This was the best gift ever."

She said she's frustrated she missed those moments, but she was determined to make it to commencement.

Thanks to some help from friends in high places, the salutatorian was able to cross the stage with her classmates.
