Investigation into shooting of 5-year-old continues

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A South Bend 5-year-old is in an Indianapolis hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. The prosecutor’s office is trying to determine if charges should be filed.

The shooting happened in the 1300 block of North Huey Street around 9 p.m. Thursday.

South Bend Police say the 5-year-old’s 7-year-old brother may have shot him intentionally, but they are not ruling out other possibilities.

The 5-year-old suffered severe damage to his hand.

He was taken overnight to Riley Hospital for Children.

The other children in the home are now in protective custody.
