ISP investigating police involved shooting that left a man dead, officer hurt

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. – Indiana State Police Troopers are investigating after a police involved shooting left one man dead and an officer injured Saturday afternoon.

According to ISP, an officer from the Columbus Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle around 4 a.m. when the vehicle fled and led officers on a chase.

Then vehicle came to a stop a while later when the driver exited the vehicle and fired at least one gunshot at police. The Columbus Police Officer was struck by the bullet and transported to an area hospital for treatment.

ISP says as a trooper was investigating the initial scene around 12:21 p.m., contact was made with a man hiding in a wooded area, later identified as 44-year-old Quentin Starke.

Starke allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot at the trooper but missed. The trooper returned fire, shooting and killing Starke.

The name of the trooper is being withheld pending investigation.
