ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. –– Joe Kernan was many things. The man who saved baseball in South Bend is one of them.
In 2005, Kernan, along with more than 50 investors purchased the South Bend Silver Hawks amid rumors of the franchise's desire to leave town. President of the South Bend Cubs Joe Hart said Kernan put the organization in a place to be successful.
Owner of the South Bend Cubs Andrew Berlin said he and Kernan had a father-son bond.
Berlin said the Cubs will honor Kernan sometime next season.
