"Just Like Momma's" grand opening of new location in Benton Harbor
BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Some international flavor coming to Benton Harbor! It's an expansion of Just Like Momma's, with one location already and a food truck, but now, a bigger spot for a family owned and operated comfort food joint.
A combination of honoring Josef Bullocks' late mother, and also his travel adventures, led to today's grand opening.
A dream years in the making has finally come true. Josef Bullocks and his family finally get a chance to honor Mary, his mother who passed away around a year and a half ago, and whose impact can still be felt, and tasted.
"She would just be proud of our legacy and that our family is still using her recipes. She used to cook different barbecue sauces and different things, make that up and cook for different other restaurants. So now our family is just putting it out to the public to share the passion that we have for food," said Josef Bullocks, owner of Just Like Momma's.
The reviews are in for those recipes.
"Dand, that's good!" Exclaimed one customer.
Thanks to word-of-mouth reviews like that one, and a very successful soft opening, Bullocks is confident this spot is one people will want to frequent.
"Everybody loved our oxtails, they love our jerk chicken, we have pizzas, we specialize in some of everything so it's a little different than our other location with the soul food, but this one is more of a Caribbean vibe because I do a lot of international traveling so I travel to Africa, Jamaica, and all the other countries and that's how I started eating the different food, I'm like iI have got to bring that to our city," said Bullocks.
Bullocks is also a pastor and has partnered with Purpose Church Ministries to help give back to the local community.
"I'm thankful for my church and they've been partners with me as well, and what we try to do is help create jobs in the city for different people who come into the church, so we're using this as a hub, to help build people up," said Bullocks.
