Elkhart County Parks BRISTOL, Ind. -- Elkhart County Parks staff will lead a kayak trip down the St. Joseph River on June 6 from 9 a.m. to Noon.
The guided float will go from Congdon Park in Bristol to Six Span Bridge at County Road 17 in Elkhart. All ages are welcome, but those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Along the way, staff will point out important natural and historical features of the river. The program is offered alongside the recent opening of a new exhibit at the Elkhart County Historical Museum called Our Waters: Past, Present, Future. “Water is inescapable in both the natural and cultural history of the county,” said Curator of Education Jenifer Blouin Policelli. “This kayaking trip will be a great way to experience that firsthand.”
A limited number of kayaks are available to rent, including one double kayak, which will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis (rental includes paddles and life jackets). Life jackets must be worn at all times by all participants.
Participants may also provide their own kayaks. Those with their own kayaks will drop off their boats at Congdon Park, drive their vehicles to Six Span, and then be shuttled back to the starting point by Parks staff.
The cost to participate is $10 per person if providing your own kayak, or $40 per person for a rental. The registration fee includes ice cream at the conclusion of the program. Registration must be completed by June 3 to participate. Visit the Elkhart County Parks website to learn more and sign up, and call (574) 848 - 4322 with questions.
