Kayakers find body in St. Joseph River
BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. - Police are investigating after kayakers found a body in the St. Joseph River just hours after officers found a flipped canoe in the same area, according to the Berrien Springs Oronoko Twp. Police Department.
At 8:40 a.m. on Friday, police were called to a section of the river near Andrews University, in Oronoko Township.
Along with the canoe, police found several items thought to have been in the canoe when it flipped.
There was no sign of any person in that area.
A few hours later, around 3:30 p.m., kayakers on the St. Joseph River found the body of a deceased male near an island just down river from the canoe.
Upon further investigation, police identified the body as that of 47-year-old Timothy Carl Johns of Berrien Springs.
An autopsy is being performed.
This incident remains under investigation.
