Knox High School drum major killed in car crash

STARKE COUNTY, Ind. -- A victim of a tragic fatal accident last night near Knox will be sorely missed by his school and the community.

Police say that 17-year-old Andrew Shearin lost control of his car Monday night and hit a telephone pole on his way home from work.

Shearin was trapped in his vehicle, and pronounced dead at the scene.

Shearin was a drum major for the Knox High School band. He was awarded the Indiana Music Educators Association Award this year for his original choral composition of The Sweetest Air is Most Often the Thickest.  He also had won the award in 2010 for his original concert band composition of Uncertainty.

Shearin was also a member of National Honor's Society.

Grief counselors were on hand at the high school to offer comfort to students and staff.

The accident is still under investigation.
