La Porte Police investigating reports of a police impersonator

LA PORTE, Ind. -- The La Porte Police Department posted a warning to its Facebook page about a man who falsely identified himself as an undercover police officer.

The man knocked on the door of a home in the 700 block of Ridge Street around 10:15 p.m. Friday.

When the resident answered, the man said he was an undercover police officer with the La Porte Police Department.

When the woman asked to see his identification, he said he had to get it from his vehicle.

He then walked south on Ridge Street out of view and did not return.

The suspect is described as a white male with shaggy blond hair wearing dark colored pants and a dark colored t-shirt.

Officers encourage residents to do exactly as the victim did - ask for ID before allowing a person into your home.

If you are still uncertain, call 911. Dispatchers can verify whether the person is an actual police officer at your home legitimately.

If you have any information in this case, please contact La Porte Police Det. Sgt. Jim Ferguson at (219) 362-9446 at ext. 208.
