LaPorte County Jail inmate's 'Murder for Hire' plot discovered by undercover agents

LA PORTE COUNTY, IND. -- Daniel Shaffer, 45, was arrested September 18, 2023 as the result of a "Murder for Hire" investigation.

According to Michigan City Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the Laporte County Drug Task Force opened an investigation into Shaffer, a LaPorte County inmate, who was soliciting the murder of two LaPorte County residents.

During the investigation, Shaffer met numerous times with a LaPorte County Drug Task Force detective and Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agent, who were acting undercover. 

During these meetings, investigators verified Shaffer's intent to solicit two murders and collected evidence to warrant his arrest.

Shaffer was charged on Friday for two Level 1 felonies for attempted murder and two Level 2 felonies of Conspiracy to Commit Murder.

His bond was set to $100,000 and he is currently in custody at LaPorte County Jail.
