NOW: Large crowds expected at Notre Dame for Lou Holtz visitation

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame is preparing to welcome large crowds as fans, former players and members of the Notre Dame community gather to honor legendary former head football coach Lou Holtz.

Holtz is returning to campus one final time, 11 days after his passing, as the university hosts a public visitation at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The visitation is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., giving the public an opportunity to pay their respects.

Among those remembering Holtz is former Notre Dame running back Rocket Ismail, who played for the Irish from 1988 to 1990. In a previous conversation, Ismail reflected on the advice Holtz gave him years after his playing days.

“One of the things that Coach Holtz told me probably about eight or nine years ago when I went to visit him at his home — he told me it’s not enough to be successful in life,” Ismail said. “You need to be significant. And the way you become significant is by helping others succeed.”

Ismail said Holtz consistently delivered that message to his players throughout their time at Notre Dame.

Holtz coached the Fighting Irish from 1986 to 1996, leading the program to a national championship in 1988 and cementing his legacy as one of the most influential coaches in college football history.

For many returning to campus this weekend, the visitation will serve as a chance to say goodbye and celebrate the life and legacy of a coach who shaped not only a football program, but generations of players.
