Last three inch snow of the season arrives right on schedule

"Are we done with the snow yet?"

The most common question meteorologists get this time of year usually concerns the "end" of winter weather. If you are looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, I (or more accurately, South Bend climate statistics) have some good news for you.

While snow can be part of the forecast well into March and April, shovelable snow (around two to three inches) stops around February 24 (on average). How appropriate that the forecast is for about three inches of snow to fall on February 24!

Typically, we have to wait until the middle of March for the end of one inch snowfalls, and measurable snow usually stops by the beginning of April.

It's been a whirlwind meteorological winter across Michiana. Remember, we got through December with only one and a half inches of snow! We've since made up quite a bit of ground, with over 20" of snow in January and likely around two feet of snow in February (taking into account what will fall Thursday and Friday).

It's harder to get big snowfalls in March and April because of a higher sun angle and more daylight, both factors in warmer temperatures becoming more consistent.

So, if you're dreading another round of winter weather, just remember that this will (probably) be over sooner rather than later.

Probably.
