Legends of Notre Dame could become a parking garage

As the University of Notre Dame’s campus expands so has the need for parking.

The University’s parking committee is now looking into possible locations to build a parking garage, but it could come at the expense of an iconic Notre Dame hangout called Legends.

For decades Legends of Notre Dame has sat tucked between academic buildings in the shadows of Notre Dame Stadium.

It began as a home for the Brothers of the Holy Cross, to a faculty club, to the current restaurant and hangout spot it is today.

“I think there are a lot of good memories we have as students and alums and friends and family of the Notre Dame community of coming here and engaging with the same people year in and year out whether that be on a game day or another day throughout the year” says Notre Dame Graduate Student Joshua Scoresby.

The need for more campus parking could bring the rich history of Legends to an end.

Notre Dame’s Office of the Executive Vice President sent an email to students and staff letting them know the parking committee is doing a study to explore the feasibility of a parking garage.

The committee says that garage would likely be built where Legends stands now.

A petition was also started to keep legends open already gained more than 600-signatures.

“I just don’t know that a big parking garage would be a good look for this campus. Not only is Legends pretty iconic for the younger generation and the senior bar was iconic for those older alums” says Scoresby

Those against tearing down legends are concerned about the workers as well

If Legends gets taken down people lose jobs – and people that have been working here do – I’ve had the same waitress here for quite a while so that would be a big bummer as well” says Scoresby.

ABC 57 did speak to people on campus that supported building a garage, but they did not wish to go on camera.

A final decision has not yet been made and university leaders say they will let everyone know the findings of their study at the end of the semester
