LMC estimates 50 percent of students qualify for state and federal aid

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Lake Michigan College is helping students focus more on school work instead of making ends meet.

The Benton Harbor community college is part of a national pilot program that helps students get state and federal assistance.

LMC estimates that more than 50 percent of its students qualify for the assistance but many do not realize that they are eligible.

Organizers say they hope the program will help keep students focused on school.

"So, we're hoping that if we can connect them with benefits that they're eligible for that would decrease some of that stress, some of those burdens, some of those barriers outside of the classroom, and those personal life issues that happen," said Pam McVay.

Only seven other community colleges in the country were picked for the program.
