Local congregations join to grieve Orlando victims

The tragedy in Orlando has prompted an outpouring of sympathy and solidarity around the world. Two local congregations held vigils Monday night.

At the First Congregational UCC of Elkhart and the Islamic Society of Michiana the message was the same.

“Discrimination against our LGBT brothers and sisters must be stopped,” said Imam Mohammad Sirajuddin of ISM.

Pastor Izzy Harbin says the only way to do that is for people of different beliefs to stand together.

“Our whole purpose of gathering tonight is to show in solidarity with one voice with many ministers across many denominations what it means to stand on the side of love,” said Pastor Harbin.

Imam Mohammad Sirajuddin spoke at the church’s service before leading the vigil at his congregation in South Bend.

People of all faiths were welcome to attend both vigils.
