SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A 19-year-old murder suspect is now behind bars.
South Bend Police confirmed Derrick Myles turned himself on Sunday to face charges in the deadly shooting of a 16-year-old South Bend Riley High School student, Alyyus Enoexpettiford, just days after being publicly identified.
ABC57 ran into friends of the Riley Student Monday afternoon, updating the memorial on Victoria Street where Alyyus was shot and killed on June 14th.
Photos, candles, and reminders of the boy now line the street.
Despite months of pain and grief, when friends heard the news that a suspect was in custody Sunday, they were overcome with an immediate sense of relief, hoping this means his case is one step closer to justice.
They’re remembering their friend, forever just 16-years-old for his upbeat personality, bright smile, and love for skateboarding.
“Yeah, Alyyus was a great guy who was smiley everywhere that he went. He lifted everybody up. Everybody knew him. He is easy to get along with just a very kind person… always understanding,” said Dion Flowers.
The suspect, Derrick Myles, is now in custody at the St. Joseph County Jail without bond.
He entered a preliminary plea of not guilty.
His first court hearing is scheduled for September 16th.
